I am beginning my inquiry plan by developing a checklist that I can use to evaluate how I am currently engaging my students as a class. I have already been observing my students and how engaged they are when I am teaching a lesson. Part of my plan is to video my students early on when I am not implementing any of the ideas I will be using during the plan so that I have an idea of how engaged they actually are. I may feel like they're engaged just because I'm engaged, but I also know that that is not necessarily the case so I am hoping that by videoing them ahead of time I will get a better idea of what else I can do.
I have been looking for checklists online that I can use to continue developing my own checklist, but I am really at a kind of standstill. Does anyone have any suggestions of items that I could include on my checklist? Thanks! :)

Would it be possible to video the kids and then develop the checklist from this video- what you are seeing and not seeing? I am wondering if you can even talk with the kids about the checklist and get their input on it?
ReplyDeleteI think that Dr. Clarke made an excellent suggestion. I saw several things on the video that I did not see during the class. One of my students played with her hair most of the time. Another boy was fidgeting with his chair while we were having a discussion. You could certainly use the (1) on task (2) attentive (3) not talking (4) participating (5) hands to self (6) making positive comments (7) following directions (8) promoting character (9) eye contact etc. Hope it goes well for you and your students.
ReplyDeleteYou may also try showing your students a video and allow them to come up with their own list of ways they are distracted. I guess it all depends on the age of the students, but I think the suggestion to involve the students in creating the checklist may provide them with more ownership.
